Tea Cup

The story follows Emily, who is torn between honouring her promise to keep her mother, Margaret, at home and the growing realisation that specialised care may be the only way to truly keep her safe.

Clare Vousden on the set of 'Tea Cup'

When I was initially approached to work on Tea Cup by my friend Lily Allmark, the first thing that stood out at me was the story, As someone who had seen the effects of dementia on people first-hand, I thought the writing was not only beautiful, but highly realistic.

The process started with the creation of a LUT for the project, which the team would use for monitoring. The creative producer & cinematographer, Hannah Comrie, and I had a meeting where we discussed the kind of visuals she was looking to achieve with the project, and one thing quickly became apparent: the emphasis on the colour pink. Hannah wanted to have the colour prevalent not only in the branding and the set, but the grade too. This led us to create a LUT with a soft magenta hue.

The grade itself was mildly challenging. This was due to lighting changes owing to the film being shot in early February (short days) on a very short time scale. Some masking and white-balance corrections were required to balance shots between scenes, but overall the film was quite a joy to colour. The set pieces and costumes really popped on-camera, and complemented the magenta-y LUT we created for it.
